“Raging Bull”

“A Raging Bull”

In the last few days we have been able to witness what occurs when President Trump’s chaotic style of leadership finally engulfs the White House.  He has become a bull enraged, threatening everything and everybody. “Missiles are coming to Syria,” Trump announces, even before his advisors have signed off any plan.  According to news reports Trump is considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III and has even discussed sacking Robert Mueller, Special Counsel.  Some Senators, Republican and Democrat are considering legislation that would enable a Special Counsel to be reinstated after an appeal.  Whether this legislation is constitutionally sound is unknown.  But they are attempting to prevent a constitutional crisis.

Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, has very sensibly decided to bail before the Republicans take a blood bath in the fall elections, due to Trump’s erratic policies.  Only the tax reform can be counted in legislative victories.  He cites family concerns and the need to be with children, but everyone presumes he will posture to later run for President, perhaps even opposing President Trump.  Those representatives who felt Ryan was a safe cover for them must now seek another.

Chief of Staff John Francis Kelly has been sidelined, as he has been increasingly been unable to bring discipline to this unruly President, who announces whatever is on his mind at the time.  While planning a response to the Syrian crisis, Trump interrupts everyone to rail against the unfairness of the FBI who are simply trying to enforce the law of the land.  But since Trump considers himself above every law, except whatever he makes up in his own head, whatever suits his purposes for himself, he rails against any who oppose him.  Unfortunately for President Trump, he will be unable to rail against the very Constitution of the United States of America which placed him in office.  “Of the people, by the people, for the people” does not allow for a dictatorship!  This may come as a great surprise to our President who says, “Harrumph!” to everything and everybody.  The slow steady process of democracy and the rule of law will eventually impeach him.

So this brings me to the point of this short study in politics.  Growing up on a farm, occasionally we had a bull which was placed in the herd for the purpose of breeding the cows, producing more offspring for the farm.  However, if the bull became unruly, he was placed alone in a pasture and was kept in exile until his fate was decided.  If he was deemed to be unsuitable and had traits of temperament which were not desired to be propagated into the offspring of the herd, he would be summarily castrated, made into a steer, and after suitable time either sold at auction or made into steak, roast and stew or hamburger meat for the table.  Even an unruly bull finally found his purpose, but not always the exalted purpose he first imagined for himself.

Farmers who manage herds of cattle are adept at containing chaos, preventing bad traits from being propagated in the offspring of the herd.  Often more docile bulls are bought to replace the more aggressive bulls, simply because it provides offspring which are easier to manage on the farm.  A bull who has lost his usefulness and is considered too dangerous to be managed is not allowed to breed and is disposed of in a most efficient manner.  I have never inquired of a farmer as to his or her satisfaction at eating the meat of an unruly bull, but I am certain at least some find a certain satisfaction is knowing that the bull which caused them so much distress and mental anguish, who tore down fences and would not allow himself to be instructed did at least serve a useful purpose in providing a good meal for the family for Sunday dinner.  When the invited minister of the church prays and give thanks, at least the meat of the unruly bull finds a sanctified purpose in the family gathering.

I suspect we are getting ready to witness a strong legal fence being placed around this unruly President to contain the damage he is causing to this nation and our constitutional democratic government.  No one is above the rule of our law.  President Trump will at least provide a good civics lesson for our children when they sit down and digest this latest constitutional crisis in their high school civics class.  At least our children can learn something from this unruly bull of a President, who forsake being an elected President and instead aspired in his own heart to become a dictatorial King!
