“A Presidency in Retreat”
June 2, 2017
The retreat of this president from his role as leader of the free world is unprecedented. When the president pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords and said he did this “to protect Pittsburg”, he abandoned the traditional role of the United States as the leader of the Free World. Just as June 6, 1941 was proclaimed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as “a day that will live in infamy” and then set out to mobilize the nations to defeat Hitler, instead in this case June 2, 2017 will forever live in the consciousness of this nation as “a day of defamy,” a day in which the United States president, forever named “Herr rump” gave the finger (“up your ass”) to the rest of the civilized world. Even our old nemesis Russia remains in the accord. China and France, along with the European Union has said they will now assume the new leadership role for the world in combating global warming.
More than a simple retreat of ‘make America first’, Herr rump went further, purposely insulting the rest of the civilized world. If this administration had really wanted to help the coal miners and others needing transition to other types of jobs in the new world of clean energy, he could have easily done so, with retraining, supplemental income, and focus of retooling an industry that is losing out to cleaner energy with less C02 footprint. Instead he gives us the same stale rhetoric and does nothing. As the governor of California, Jerry Brown, said in an interview on NPR this morning, “when the buggy whip industry was in decline due to the advent of the automobile, the proper course is not to subsidize it, but to retrain its workers to the new reality of the auto.” California, Washington State, New York and some 61 cities (including Pittsburg!) have said they will endorse and support the Paris Climate Change agreement. President Herr rump has simply abdicated the leadership role of the United States and has conceded innovation in the clean energy sphere to the Chinese and the Germans and other entrepreneurs!
This president, who opposes everything offers nothing. I do hope the Republican leadership soon begins to disavow his leadership. If not, they too will become the party of irrelevance, as well as the president who is already the president of irrelevance. Looking into the past, driving the car of the nation backwards in time will not solve the problems of today nor those of the future. God help us, I say! God help us all!
The Voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight in this desert a highway for our God, in the name of Jesus Christ, who we love and whom we affirm as the Creator and Sustainer of the world! Lord, we look beyond this present time of disappointment and peril. We look forward to the new age which is yet to come! Bring us, O Lord, into the future you have prepared for us, with good hope in your sustaining hand. The old world is dying now; may the new world come quickly! Maranatha! “Come quickly, Lord Jesus Christ!”
Let all of God’s people say, “Amen!”
“Amen! We praise you, Lord Jesus Christ!”
